How to become a funeral attendant

ONET places the job in Job Zone 1-2, which means very little to some preparation is needed[16]. In an ONET survey of 22 workers, 47% said a high school diploma or equivalent is required[17]. Another 22% said an associate's degree, 13% said some college courses, 9% said a bachelor's degree and 7% said less than a high school diploma[17]. With only 22 respondents[17], treat these shares as a rough picture.

What funeral attendants do

O*NET describes the job as a mix of tasks during funerals, such as placing the casket, arranging flowers or lights, escorting mourners and handling funeral equipment[18]. Typical tasks include:

Workers report titles such as Funeral Attendant, Funeral Assistant, Funeral Greeter and Funeral Home Attendant[20]. The title Funeral Director also appears in that list, but the pay figures on this page are for the funeral attendant category only[20].

Job outlook

BLS projects employment to grow 2.6% from 2025 to 2035, from about 31,300 to 32,100 jobs[5]. These counts include self-employed workers[5]. Employment in all occupations is projected to grow 3.5% over the same period[21]. So this job is projected to grow slightly slower than average.

About 5,400 openings a year are projected on average[6]. Openings come from retirements and moves to other occupations as well as from new jobs[6]. Each year, 10.4% of funeral attendants leave the labor force and 6.5% move to a different occupation[22]. Only 0.2% were self-employed in 2025[23].

Is it a good fit?

Entry needs a high school diploma and short-term training, with no related experience[2]. Pay is lower than the all-occupation median, at $35,680 compared with $50,980[1][4]. Growth is small at 2.6%, but about 5,400 openings a year are projected, so there is steady turnover[5][6]. Pay differs by place, from $29,160 in Kentucky to $55,850 in New Hampshire[12].
