How to become a decorator

BLS Employment Projections describe the typical path this way:

The training details below come from a BLS Occupational Outlook Handbook profile that covers a wider group of occupations than this one[16]. That profile says workers usually need a high school diploma or equivalent, though some employers hire people without a formal credential[17]. Training on the job sometimes lasts only a few days but usually lasts several months[18]. Workers who run computer-controlled equipment may need extra training in programming[19].

In an O*NET survey of 18 workers, 59% said the job required less than a high school diploma, 21% said a high school diploma or equivalent, and 17% said some college courses[20]. The facts do not list a license.

What decorators do

O*NET describes the work as putting paint, coatings or decoration on items such as furniture, glass and pottery, as well as jewelry, toys, books and leather[3]. Typical tasks include:

Workers report job titles such as decorator, painter and glass decorator[22]. The wider OOH profile says some workers make elaborate or decorative designs and that workers must be able to blend paint colors to match a surface[23][24].

Where they work

The OOH profile for the wider group says the work is usually done in specially ventilated areas. Workers wear masks or respirators and may wear gloves and other protective gear[25]. They often stand for long periods and may bend, stoop or crouch[26]. Most are employed full time[27]. Miscellaneous manufacturing was the largest employer at 12%[28].

Job outlook

BLS projects employment to grow 1.3% from 2025 to 2035[5]. That is from about 8,200 to 8,300 jobs, a gain of about 100[5]. Employment in all occupations is projected to grow 3.5%[29]. The projections count includes self-employed workers[5], and 3.7% of these workers were self-employed in 2025[30].

About 700 openings a year are projected on average[6]. Openings include jobs created when workers retire or move to other occupations, not only new jobs[6]. Each year, 3.1% of workers leave the labor force and 5.8% move to a different occupation[31]. OEWS counted about 7,940 wage and salary jobs in May 2025[32].

Is it a good fit?

The facts show pay below the all-occupations median, with a wide spread between the 10th and 90th percentiles[1][2][4]. Entry does not require a formal credential, and training on the job is moderate-term[7]. Projected growth is slower than for all occupations[5][29]. Pay also varies by place, so state and metro figures are worth a look[12].
