How to become a mental health counselor
BLS lists a master's degree as the typical entry education, with no related work experience and an internship or residency as typical training[7]. The BLS handbook says requirements vary by the type of counselor[17].
- First: get the degree. Mental health counselors typically need a master's degree. Common undergraduate fields are psychology, social science, and public policy and social services[18].
- Next: complete the supervised clinical part. Master's programs often include a clinically supervised internship[18].
- Then: get licensed. All states require mental health counselors to be licensed, which involves passing a national exam and doing supervised clinical work under a licensed counselor[19].
Substance abuse and behavioral disorder counselors typically need at least a bachelor's degree. Requirements can range from a high school diploma to a master's degree, depending on the position, state or employer[20]. Those in private practice must be licensed. Rules vary by state, but all states require a master's degree and a set number of supervised clinical hours, plus an exam and yearly continuing education[21]. Outside private practice, licensing rules vary by state[22]. Some jobs also ask for basic life support or CPR certification[23]. State licensing board details are available from CareerOneStop[24].
BLS notes that counselors who have overcome addiction themselves are sometimes seen as especially helpful to people seeking treatment[25]. Good communication and compassion are listed as important qualities[26][27].
Where they work
Counselors work in many settings, such as hospitals, correctional facilities, and treatment centers that serve inpatients or outpatients. Some addiction counselors work in residential centers where clients live during recovery[28]. The largest employer group in 2025 was offices of other health practitioners, at 20%[29].
Most counselors work full time, though part-time work is common. In inpatient or residential settings, they may work evenings, nights or weekends[30]. The work is often stressful. Workloads can be large, resources may fall short of demand, and counselors may step in during crises or work with agitated clients[31].
Job outlook
BLS projects employment to grow 18.4% from 2025 to 2035, from about 533,400 to 631,400 jobs, a gain of 98,000[2]. For all occupations, the projected growth is 3.5%[3]. These counts include self-employed workers[2].
About 50,500 openings a year are projected on average[6]. Openings include jobs left by workers who retire or change occupations, not only new jobs[6]. Each year, 2.8% of workers leave the labor force and 4.2% move to a different occupation[32].
Is it a good fit?
Pay is above the all-occupations median, and projected growth is well above the average for all jobs[1][5][2][3]. The training path is long for mental health counseling, since it typically involves a master's degree, supervised clinical work and a license[7][18][19]. The work can be stressful[31]. For substance abuse and behavioral disorder roles, the entry education varies more by position and state[20].
