How to become an engraver
BLS describes the typical path[6]:
- First: finish high school or get an equivalent diploma[6].
- Next: no work experience in a related occupation is typically needed[6].
- Then: learn the job through moderate-term on-the-job training[6].
In an O*NET survey of 20 workers, 54% said a high school diploma or equivalent is required[16]. Another 33% said less than a high school diploma, and 13% named an associate degree[16]. This is a small survey, so treat it as a rough picture.
O*NET places the job in a group needing very little to some preparation[17].
What engravers do
Etchers and engravers cut or etch designs into metal, wood, rubber and other materials[18]. Tasks listed by O*NET include:
- Checking etched work for depth, evenness and defects[19].
- Studying sketches, blueprints or photographs to plan a design[19].
- Preparing workpieces by cutting, sanding, cleaning or polishing[19].
- Engraving patterns, lettering or trademarks with hand tools or hand-held power tools[19].
- Mixing etching chemicals and exposing workpieces to acid[19].
- Using computer software to design patterns[19].
- Measuring and calculating the size of lettering and designs[19].
Workers report titles such as laser engraver, chemical engraver and photo engraver[20].
Job outlook
BLS projects employment to decline 0.7% from 2025 to 2035, from about 8,900 to 8,800 jobs[3]. All occupations are projected to grow 3.5%[21]. Even so, about 800 openings are projected each year[5]. Openings include jobs that come from workers retiring or changing occupations, as well as new jobs[5].
Each year, 3.9% of workers leave the labor force and 5.3% move to a different occupation[22]. About 12.7% of etchers and engravers were self-employed in 2025[23].
Is it a good fit?
The facts show a small occupation with a low barrier to entry. It asks for a high school diploma and moderate-term on-the-job training[6]. Median pay is below the all-occupation median[1][2], and employment is projected to dip while openings continue[3][5]. The facts here do not cover hours, work settings or training length, so check those locally.
