How to become a market research analyst

The typical entry education is a bachelor's degree. The projections data list no related work experience and no on-the-job training[7].

Certification is voluntary and is a way to show professional skill[21]. The facts do not say how many years it all takes.

What market research analysts do

Analysts study markets to judge how well a product or service might sell, or to plan a marketing campaign[22]. Typical tasks include:

Workers report job titles such as Market Analyst, Content Strategist and Communications Specialist[24].

Where they work

Many industries use market research, so these analysts work across the economy[25]. Management, scientific, and technical consulting services was the largest employer, at 11%[26]. Analysts work alone or on teams, and some work with designers to build charts and infographics[27]. Full-time work during business hours is typical[28]. About 3.8% were self-employed in 2025[29].

Job outlook

BLS expects jobs to rise 7% between 2025 and 2035, going from roughly 952,700 to 1,019,000[2]. For all occupations the projection is 3.5%[3].

About 82,000 openings a year are projected[6]. These include jobs left open by people who retire or change occupations, not only new jobs[6]. Each year, 2.5% of workers leave the labor force and 5.1% move to another occupation[30].

The OEWS count of about 899,580 jobs[31] and the projections count differ because the projections include self-employed workers[2].

Is it a good fit?

The facts show a median wage above the all-occupation median[1][5], a wide pay range[4], and a bachelor's degree as the usual entry point[7]. Growth is faster than average[2][3]. The job suits people who like working with data and writing up results, since reports and analysis make up much of the work[23]. Pay varies a lot by place, so check your own state and metro[12][14].
