How much do valet parkers make?

The median wage for Parking Attendants was $35,150 a year, or $16.90 an hour[1]. Half of workers earned more and half earned less[1]. The average was a little lower, at $34,990 a year and $16.82 an hour[7].

For all occupations in the US, the median annual wage was $50,980[4]. So the median for this job sits below the national median for all jobs.

Here is how annual pay was spread out[3]:

Point Annual wage Hourly wage
10th percentile[3][8] $27,040 $13.00
25th percentile[3][8] $29,960 $14.41

75th percentile[3][8] $37,670 $18.11
90th percentile[3][8] $44,550 $21.42

A percentile is a boundary. The lowest-paid 10% of workers earned less than $27,040[3]. BLS publishes percentile wages, not a starting salary[9].

These figures cover wage and salary workers, part-time and full-time. They leave out the self-employed, nonproduction bonuses and the cost of benefits[10].

How to become a valet parker

BLS describes the typical path into this job as short:

In an O*NET survey of 24 workers, 61% said a high school diploma or equivalent was required and 38% said less than a high school diploma[15]. That is a small survey, so treat it as a rough picture only.

O*NET places the job in Job Zone 1-2, which means very little to some preparation is needed[16]. Our facts do not say how long the training lasts or whether a license is required.

What valet parkers do

O*NET describes the work as parking vehicles or issuing tickets for customers in a lot or garage, sometimes at a car dealership or rental car facility[17]. Typical tasks include[18]:

Job outlook

BLS projects employment of Parking Attendants to grow 2% from 2025 to 2035, from about 139,200 to 142,000 jobs[2]. Employment in all occupations is projected to grow 3.5% over the same years[19]. These counts include self-employed workers[2], who made up 0.9% of the group in 2025[20].

About 16,400 openings a year are projected on average[5]. Openings come from workers who leave as well as new jobs[5]. Each year, 4.1% of workers leave the labor force and 7.3% move to a different occupation[21].

The OEWS count of 137,880 wage and salary jobs[22] and the projection count are different measures, so they do not match exactly.

Is it a good fit?

The facts point to a job that is easy to enter, since no formal education or related experience is typical[6]. Pay is below the all-occupations median[1][4], and growth is slower than the all-occupations rate[2][19]. Openings are still frequent, with about 16,400 a year[5]. Where you live matters for pay, with medians ranging from $23,920 to $43,180 across states[11]. Our facts do not cover tips, hours or schedules, so ask local employers about those.
